5 Ways To Avoid Sending Spam With Magento

It’s frustrating to receive email that’s spam. However, it’s also frustrating whenever customers move your email to the spam folder, not giving it a time of day. In truth, there are many reasons as to why email gets filtered and labeled as spam. However, if you’re trying to reach your customers and or potential leads through Magento, you’re not alone. People using Magento would take to the forums to vent about this problem.

In this article, we’ll look at how users can avoid having their e-mails be marked as spam, assuming that the intention is to not send spam. Here are five ways that you can go about sending your emails to customers without being rejected as spam.

1. Comply With The CAN-SPAM Act

The first way to avoid sending spam in Magento is adhering to Can-Spam Act. Yes, sending emails has rules and regulations, especially when you use Magento. Before you send an email via Magento, make sure that these seven requirements of the CAN-SCAN Act:

  • Don’t use false or misleading headings
  • Don’t use deceptive subject lines
  • View the message as an ad
  • Tell recipients your location
  • Show how to opt out of receiving future emails from you
  • Respect opt-out requests
  • Monitor how others act on your behalf

Even when your emails contain transactional and or business relationship content, despite these being exempted from the CAN rules, don’t ever include false or misleading routing information.

2. Avoid Trigger Words And Phrases

Buzzwords and phrases are already an annoyance online. However, to avoid sending spam, it shouldn’t spread into the emailing realm. In fact, a spam filter is designed to remove commercial advs and promotions from a recipient’s email inbox. As such, the filter will react strongly to trigger words and phrases, if the recipient sets it to do so.
Although there’s no sufficient list of spam trigger words or phrases, still keep in mind that your email will be marked as spam if you use trigger words or phrases. Here are some examples of such words and phrases:

  • Free membership
  • Free offer
  • Free grant money

You can notice that “free” is a common trigger word found in emails, and online in general. You may want to use this term sparingly.

3. Stay Clear Of Spam Traps

If you don’t have an opt-in or permission to send an email, then you’ll fall into something called the “spam trap.” Falling into such traps can spawn liability claims, or worst – a lawsuit.
The good news is, you can avoid sending an email to spam trap email address by using only email addresses where you have the permission and an opt-in to send them to.

4. Get Off The Blacklist

When it comes to running a site, you don’t want to end up on any blacklists. If your server is hosted on cloud-hosting providers (i.e. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Engine or Microsoft Azure), chances are that used IP addresses are not trusted, or even blacklisted.

First, check to see if your server is blacklisted. These services can show you if whether or not you’re on a blacklist:

  • https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx
  • http://www.dnsstuff.com/docs/ip4r/

Then, if it turns out that you’re blacklisted, follow up with the site that has added you to the blacklist. You can contest this decision by requesting that you get removed from the blacklist.

5. Monitor Deliverability

The last tips to avoid sending spam in Magento is putting email delivery under your control. Email addresses like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL, and Hotmail help you keep track of deliverability, since they’re reputable email providers. With that said, set up approximately five mailboxes at each provider. When you do this, all you would have to do is send an email to the email addresses, and then log into each account to check if the email was successfully delivered.

If you come across a problem in delivery, go back and check if everything is accounted for. If that doesn’t work, contact your Email Service Provider about how you can solve this issue.

Conclusion

It’s necessary to avoid sending spam when approaching customers. We hope that this article has shed some light on correct configuration, when it comes to sending email via Magento. By going through this checklist, you can rest assured that your emails won’t be sent to the spam folder, and customers would be willing to receive more of your emails, especially transactional and or business ones. The last thing you’d want is for the recipient to mistake your important email for meaningless spam.

Remember: the more reputable and the less spammy you look, the more likely recipients will read that email, and give you a permanent spot in your subscribers’ inboxes.
